[Request] Fission - Crater |
[Request] Fission - Crater |
This is an alternate project of Andreas Hedlund a.k.a. "Vintersorg".
Quote:
FISSION was formed in 2002 by Benny Hägglund, His goal was to release material that molded melody and aggression into energetic compositions; at times simplistic and at others intricate.
When Hägglund, who also serves as the live session drummer for Vintersorg, began to write material for what was to become Crater, he felt compelled to seek the support of Vintersorg (Andreas Hedlund). Hägglund wrote some songs to which Vintersorg simply added the vocal lines. Though their creative output was still in its experimental phase of recording demos, both felt very confident about the prospect of recording an album, and knew that the end result would be a well focused, energetic, and precise release.
The two-track demo soon made its way to a limited number of record companies, including Vintersorg’s label, NAPALM RECS. Following a period of brief negotiation, FISSION signed on with the Austrian Indy label.
The band was now very eager to complete the writing phase and move on to recording the new material. Hägglund wasted no time, working on the framework of the songs, while Vintersorg provided the lyrics, vocals, keyboards, and FX.
The actual recording of Crater was completed in several sessions. The drums were recorded in Ballerina Audio AB. All other tracks (keyboard, guitar, bass, and FX) were laid at the band members’ personal studios, Drt. RiBBon and Wave Studios. The vocals were then recorded at a local Studio (Black Lodge). Except the drum tracks (engineered by Nils Johansson at Ballerina), FISSION recorded all the takes themselves, and also personally mixed the album at Drt. RiBBon Studios. The goal was to achieve the right sound–“a special sound that differentiates itself from the standard sound produced at more well known facilities.”
The sonic experiments present on FISSION’s debut, Crater, prove that it is possible to create “in-your-face” metal containing sophisticated passages and transitions and build a diverse identity. Both members will continue to share this vision, which combines their own brand of melodic thrash metal with new perspectives and personal coloring.
......and then 3 years later FISSION is back, with a new album and a new label, in the 12th of July 2007 Bradd and Carrie from Aphotic records (USA) made a trip far up in the north of Sweden and inked a deal with Benny and Andreas... Hopefully the new album will be recorded after the summer of 2007... |

Fission were first introduced to the musical field of metal music in 2000 and they are the latest project of Andreas Hedlund (Vintersorg, Borknagar) and Benny Hogglund (session drummer of Vintersorg). The aim of the two musicians was to mix effectively aggressive riffs with melody. “Crater” is their debut album and it stands out with its thrash metal sound that is filled with powerful compositions and catchy but even more dynamic music. Hedlund himself describes Fision’s music as “harsh and razor-sharp thrash metal, with a lot of melody and atmosphere as well as many alternations in vocals that one moment are pure black metal and the other tend to travel to more calm and quiet musical paths.” When you first listen to “Crater” it may bring to your mind bands like Children of Bodom or Dark Tranquility but with further listening you can detect those certain parts of Fission’s music that give away an air of originality. After the small intro of “Mechanism” you enter the realm of Fission with title track “Crater” which gives you right away a taste of what is going to follow. It’s a pure metal song with melodic keyboard parts that gives its place to “Accelerator” where you are introduced to an even more melodic sound with power metal moments. “Mind Vortex” and “Eremiten” show a more “sensitive” side of the band with a slower rhythm and more massive sound with an atmospheric air around them. “The Chaos Algorithm” is reminiscent of the old good days of pure thrash metal. Fission’s music is solid and that is made known from the good production that creates a result of a full sound. Of course it wouldn’t hurt if the songs didn’t follow the same musical pattern. Lastly, “Syndrome” the closing track of the album says goodbye in a powerful and dynamic way leaving the listener quite content. |

Fission is a band that I have been curious about ever since I first read about it in Vintersorg interviews. It was created by Vintersorg's live drummer Benny Hägglund in 2002 and only consists of him and Vintersorg himself, two talented multi-instrumentalists who have worked together for several years now. Lyrically Fission reminds a lot of the mysterious scientific lyrics of Vintersorg but musically it is far removed from their progressive blend of extreme metal and more classic rock tunes. This project is more straight-forward death / thrash metal rooted in the well respected Swedish tradition but with the two individuals' own personal touches. Without imitating himself from his other bands, Vintersorg handle both growling and clean vocals with ease in a way that has never been heard from him before. From time to time the music come off as a little stiff, probably due to the fact that there are only two members in the band, but mostly they manage to keep up the pace and energy needed to make an album like this enjoyable. A track like "Accelarator" shows remarkable skills in mixing aggression, melody and atmosphere into something much more interesting than what most At The Gates worshipping bands are capable of. "Crater" is an album which sounds strangely familiar and fresh at the same time and I definitely recommend it to all fans of modern death / thrash metal who don't mind a few odd twists and turns now and then.
