Biography
The Misfits are an American horror punk band formed in 1977 in New Jersey, led by singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig and later, bassist Jerry Only. They were pioneers of the subgenre of horror punk, as well as highly influential on heavy metal, and rock music in general. Though they ceased recording and performing in 1983, a new version of the band (led by Only but without Danzig) began operations in 1995.
The early Misfits were often melodic, featuring Danzig's versatile singing, which had a style rooted in Italian tenors such as Mario Lanza and in 1950s doo-wop.] Early Misfits songs tended to have catchy, sing-along choruses, initially backed by Danzig's distorted keyboard accompaniments and later by willfully crude guitar-rock. The band began as a largely untrained ensemble. Musically, the band has also displayed some rockabilly influences (but not as much as psychobilly bands). After several lineup changes and increasing international acclaim, Danzig disbanded the original Misfits in 1983.
The band often wore corpse paint when performing, and bassist Jerry Only reputedly invented a hairstyle called the devilock, with the bangs coming to a point in front of the nose or chin, a style still worn by fans (A.K.A. Fiends) today and contributed to the foundation of horror punk.
When the band originally reformed, it featured Michale Graves on vocals, Jerry Only on bass, Dr. Chud (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Drummer) on drums, and Jerry's brother Doyle on guitar.
A third, "touring" incarnation of the band is presently led by the only other "constant" original member, bassist Jerry Only. Members of the touring group have included Marky Ramone (of the Ramones), and both drummer ROBO (who was a member of the original band), and guitarist Dez Cadena of Black Flag fame. |

Album review
The first time I listened to this record, I was really not that impressed. Somehow as a huge Misfits fan, I was expecting more. But, then with each repeated listen, I found each and every one of the songs present on this record growing on me, with an unrelenting speed. After nine or ten listening, I finally came to the terms that not only did I like this record an incredible amount, but I found each and every one of the tunes to own a unique enjoyability that only the Misfits can bring forth.
"Famous Monsters" opens with an instrumental, much like "American Psycho" did. The instrumental is called "Kong At The Gates". It is a intense musical composition that builds in hostility until it comes to its abrupt conclusion. It is a prime example of Jerry Only's command of guitar playing, and is a tribute to this awesome band's true abilities.
From there we are taken to the enormously finger snapping and funky song "The Forbidden Zone". It is a dancey punk song, which is the tale of an alternate dimension which was talked about in the Superman comic books. This upbeat punk song with tongue in cheek lyrics is a great precursor as to what remains on this record. That being, nothing but awesome hardcore punk tunes.
The Misfits continue the horrorcore vibe with the third track, "Lost in Space", which features Mikey Graves crooning at the end of the tune "Danger...Danger...Will Robinson...Warning, Warning...". Yes. That's right, this song contains punk connotations towards the legendary television series. It is another upbeat, melodic song that dabbles in both hardcore and punk, and for the large part is heavy and enjoyable.
Another great song on this record, happened to be the first single released by the band for this record. "Scream" is a quick and thrashy song, that features Mikey's smooth singing and Jerry and Doyle's consistent musical abilities. T
he video for this song was directed by legendary horror film director George Romero. The song itself, is poignant and heavy and extremely danceable. This is one that will bring out the fiend in all of us. It will grab you by the Doc Martens, force you to get up, and move on into the circle mosh pit.
The record continues from there with terrific song after terrific song. Other favorites of mine on this record are: "Pumpkinhead". "Scarecrow Man", "Living Hell", "Fiend Club", "Hunting Humans" and "Helena".
The basic version of the record concludes with second part of the opening instrumental, entitled "Kong Unleashed". It bring the record to a phenomenal, screeching halt. ]
Like I said before, this record totally and completely grew on me. I went from thinking it was not that great to thinking it was the best thing since sliced bread. I don't quite know what it is, but there is something strangely entertaining and enthralling about the upbeat hardcore/punk sound and sing-a-long style lyrics.
On this album you also get the three bonus tracks.
Devil Doll
1,000,000 Years BC
and
Helena Part 2
All three are just as great as any of the songs present on the record. They two, are packed with the B-horror movie character that so much separates this incredible punk band from NJ from everybody else.
If you are a newcomer to the music of the Misfits or a long time fiend, you should certainly check out this awesome poppy punk record, which is great from top to bottom.
I have to give it the highest thumbs up for its sheer intensity and brilliance. Put on your skeleton gloves, your skull face paint, and get ready to be body slammed by these intense, incredible punk/hardcore powerhouses.
Hope u enjoy,
Download it and please seed it.
